Chaos erupted in a New York subway station over the weekend when police opened fire on a train car, resulting in multiple injuries.

ABC 7 reports that just after 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, two officers spotted a 37-year-old man who had allegedly not paid the $2.90 fare at a Brownsville, Brooklyn, station and ignored officers as he walked onto the train platform.

"The officers are asking him to stop. The male is refusing to stop at a certain point on the platform,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said. “The male, he mutters the words, 'I'm going to kill you if you don't stop following me.’”

According to Maddrey, the suspect, 37-year-old Derell Mickles, brandished a knife, and when officers told him to let go of the weapon, the man said they would have to shoot him. The altercation, which is said to have occurred on the platform, continued onto an L train car that had just arrived at station.

After the man pulled out a knife, police tasered him, but when that didn’t stop him, they opened fire, ultimately leaving the suspect, an officer, and two subway passengers—a 26-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man—injured.

All four are in the hospital; the woman and the suspect are both in critical condition. The NYPD has since opened an investigation into the incident. The department also revealed that the suspect's knife went missing during the shooting, and has identified the man whom they think took it.

People are blasting the NYPD for being careless during the incident, while others have pointed to the millions of dollars the department has spent to catch those who evade subway fare, rather than re-allocating that money to help riders.

X users also slammed a tweet from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who wrote, “Earlier today, one of our officers was shot while protecting our subway system. I am relieved to report he is in good condition now, and we have arrested the suspect who put so many lives in danger. I cannot thank these officers enough for their bravery.”

A community note was added to clarify Adams' tweet, saying, "The officer in question was shot by a fellow NYPD officer. NYPD officers also shot 2 bystanders and the fare evasion suspect."
