An inmate arrested by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in Arizona was caught on video crawling past security guards to allegedly sexually assault a woman.

Per ABC15, Justin Avery was arrested on April 12 for the alleged assault of five women at the Arizona State Tempe campus and was later taken to the Intake Transfer and Release Facility on April 17. While awaiting court processing for the charges against him, security camera footage caught Avery crawling along the ground to reach the female side of the waiting area.

The facility is separated into male and female waiting sides with a security guard stationed between them. While crawling between the sides of the waiting area, he went undetected by the security guard on duty. As he reached the other side he approached a woman who was asleep on the ground and lowered his pants.

Authorities questioned Avery after the incident and he admitted he crawled like a "spider" because he noticed a female inmate's "fat ass." Another woman noticed him attempting to assault the woman and told him to get off, to which he responded by shushing her. The officer noticed shortly after and called for backup.

"Although males and females are kept on separate sides of the waiting room while completing the booking process or awaiting court hearings, detention officers eyes cannot be everywhere, all of the time," said a spokesperson for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. "This inmate crawled around a pony wall to the female side of the room and attempted to assault an inmate, all within a minute and a half. This area is consistently monitored and entered by detention staff throughout the day. Once seen, detention officers responded immediately and removed the inmate to an enclosed cell."

Police say that the whole incident lasted less than two minutes. In court records, Avery admitted to investigators that he hoped to "rape" the woman. He was later hit with another count of sexual assault and is due in court next week.
