Report Shows That Models on Fashion Magazine Covers in 2014 Were Overwhelmingly White

It's no secret that the fashion industry has a diversity problem.

A report done by The Fashion Spot shows that diversity is still a huge problem in the fashion industry, especially when it comes to magazine covers. The Fashion Spot scoured 44 publications from around the globe and found that out of 611 models that appeared on covers, only 119 were people of color.

A handful of publications, including Harper’s Bazaar U.S. and U.K., Vogue U.K., Vogue Netherlands, Vogue Paris, Vogue Ukraine, Vogue Russia, Teen Vogue, Numéro, LOVE, and Porter, did not use a model of the color a single time this entire year.

Even countries where white people are not the majority, like Japan, disproportionately used white models. Vogue Japan featured only three women of color on 14 covers, and only one of those models is Japanese.

The report also found that Vogue U.K. shamefully hasn't had a model of color on a solo cover in 12 years now. The statistics show why it was such a big deal that American Vogue used models that weren't white on its September issue this year

Even success stories, like Vogue Italia, which had 10 models of color out of 64 total, are watered down because its stats are bolstered by an unusually large number of models in the publication's September issue.
