'Toy Story 4' Tops Box Office but Falls Short of Expectations

Toy Story 4 put together an impressive weekend, as the Pixar sequel dominated the box office.
The movie grossed $118 million on its opening weekend, making it one of the biggest ever for an animated film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Toy Story 4 didn't just wow domestic audiences, it also pulled in $120 million internationally, giving it $238 million in total, which is a record for animated films.
Although this was a massive haul, Toy Story 4 still fell victim to the overall decline in ticket sales. Before its release, insiders projected the film to earn between $140 and $160 million in the North American market. Despite falling short, the film is far from a disappointment. Toy Story 4 is fourth on the list of highest grossing animated films, sitting behind Incredibles 2, Finding Dory, and Shrek The Third. It's also worth noting that Toy Story 4 had direct competition from Illumination's The Secret Life of Pets 2.
Toy Story 4's huge opening was the only bright spot for this weekend's box office. United Artists' Child's Play reboot only grossed $14 million.That wasn't nearly as bad as Anna which failed to make a dent altogether. The Luc Besson crime saga only generated $3.5 million in ticket sales, making it the worst opening of his career.
