We've been following Brockhampton for years, but the last nine months have felt extra special. Since the release of the first Saturation album last summer, they've been on an incredible run and put out some of the best music we've heard in years. Now, they're seeing rewards for all the work they've put in.
A week ago, the group announced that they've signed with RCA Records. They're currently at work recording their next album, Puppy, but this weekend felt like a celebration. For the last three days, we kept seeing unreal moments pop up on social media. Their dreams are coming true, and now they're getting praised by Jamie Foxx during dinner with Ansel Elgort—a day before Lakeith Stanfield asked to join the group. What a weekend.
One of the most fun parts of being a music fan is watching an artist receive the recognition they deserve—and that's exactly what this weekend was like for Brockhampton fans. Here's what went down.
FRIDAY
Friday was Romil's 23rd birthday. It was also the day that his collaboration with Kali Uchis and Steve Lacy, "Just A Stranger," dropped. To celebrate, actor Ansel Elgort dropped in and they went for a joyride in a Ferrari—a real life version of his performance in Baby Driver (a movie that inspired Brockhampton's "GUMMY" video).
On Saturday, Brockhampton and Elgort had dinner with Jamie Foxx. Sometime during the course of the meal, Foxx started playing the end of the "Star" music video on his phone and kept saying how talented the guys are. There's no context as to how this dinner even happened, but the clip is pretty great:
After dinner, Kevin hinted that they would be heading Jaden Smith's show that night in Los Angeles, and they ended up all coming out on stage during a surprise appearance:
Meanwhile, Eric Andre was somewhere partying with a group of naked people to "GUMMY" during his Quinceañera. Because life is fucking crazy if you're Brockhampton right now. Note: The naked guy at Eric Andre's party isn't actually Eric himself—but he was there dancing along to "GUMMY" with the rest of them. For more on Eric's weird night, head here.
Sunday was relatively low key, but at one point Kevin Abstract started randomly asking people if they wanted to join Brockhampton. We still haven't heard back from Obama, but Lakeith Stanfield accepted the invitation.
Then, the weekend ended with a sunset and a re-listen to Saturation III. Perfect. Can't wait to see what they do next weekend at Coachella for a follow-up.
