Premiere: Ray BLK Wraps Up The Summer With Roy Ayers-Sampling “Sunshine”

September 13, 2024

It’s been two years since Ray BLK released her debut album, Access Denied, but she hasn’t exactly been quiet. Last year alone, she was named UD Music’s first ambassador before conquering the small screen as the star of Champion, Candice Carty-Williams’ love letter to Black British music. Still, fans were hungry for new Ray BLK solo music.

She made her official return last month with “Courage”, but she’s already back to strike while the iron’s hot with “Sunshine”, an uplifting new jam to end the summer on a high.

Keen ears will immediately notice the instrumental, produced by GG and 169, which samples Roy Ayers’ surefire charmer “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”, bringing the optimism and joy of the 1976 original with it. With that in place, Ray delivers a soothing vocal performance that offers hope for anyone feeling ground down or held back from their potential.

Taking to Instagram to explain the track’s backstory, Ray writes: “When I wrote this song, my light felt so dim. I was waiting for people to give me permission to shine. Permission to be myself, to grow and speak my truth. In relationships, and in my work. The dark of this music industry was oppressing me real bad. But after the rain comes the sun! I’m so grateful to have the freedom of being an independent artist again! There’s nobody making me feel not good enough, nobody muting my creativity to commercialise me, nobody to tell me to change my hair, change my weight, change my clothes. When the rain poured it POURED but I used it to WATER myself and the growth makes me feel ready for harvest! Full project coming very soon but for now pre-save Sunshine in my bio and tomorrow we step into the light.”
