Tyla needed a hand with her first VMA win in the Best Afrobeats category, which Lil Nas X gladly helped with.

It appeared that Tyla had a slightly awkward moment during her Best Afrobeats Video acceptance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night (Sept. 11). But rather than give into the viral jokes, the South African artist took the backlash as "weird."

Lil Nas X and Halle Bailey were presenters in the category, and upon Tyla being given the "Moon Person" statue, it was too heavy for her. The "Water" artist then asked for it to be held.

"Oh my gosh," Tyla began. "You guys know me and holding awards. I am not strong enough."

After a brief pause, which viewers misread as Bailey not wanting to hold it, Nas grabbed the statue while Tyla continued with her acceptance speech.

But on social media, some used it as an opportunity to pit Bailey and Tyla against each other, which the latter quickly responded to.

"Y'all make everything weird… I was not asking my girl Halle…
We just girls 💅🏽 , STFU I WON A VMAAAA," the 22-year-old wrote.

Bailey reposted the tweet and replied, "exactly love u babes congrats."

Tyla's shown that she's cool with Halle's older sister, singer-actress, Chlöe, whom she warmly greeted at the 2024 Grammy Awards earlier this year.
