Rising R&B star Ella Mai returns with the first collaborative track off her forthcoming self-titled debut. For “Whatchamacallit,” Mai recruits veteran Chris Brown to sing about the sneaky joys of infidelity. Listen to the new song above.
For Ella Mai, this collaboration is a dream come true. “Vocally, he’s amazing,” the singer says about Brown. “If he didn’t come out the way he did and make the music that he did, I think I would be a completely different artist. He’s influenced an entire generation.”
Aside from Brown, Mai’s new album includes features from John Legend on “Everything,” and mysterious R&B goddess H.E.R. on “Gut Feeling.” She’s also currently touring with Bruno Mars on his 24k Magic tour.
Mai broke through the mainstream with her summer slow jam “Boo’d Up.” Shen then returned with a remix, and her new song “Trip.”
The singer has been unintentionally caught up in some drama, after Jacquees decided to cover "Trip." Mai’s 10 Summers team, namely Mustard, delivered Jacquees a cease and desist, and now the Georgia crooner’s version of “Trip” has been wiped from the internet, despite a brief visit to Pornhub.
Ella Mai’s debut album comes out on Oct. 12. You can pre-order the project here.
