'Captain Marvel' Spoof Imagines a Movie Completely About the Blockbuster Video in the Trailer

Captain Marvel is tasked with another mission in Conan O'Brien's version of the trailer: Pick a movie to rent from Blockbuster.

Captain Marvel is slated to bring comic fans back to the '90s. The debut trailer practically screamed it by opening on Carol Danvers crashing through the roof of a Blockbuster Video. Because what's more capable of setting the nostalgic scene than that? (And meta, considering the franchise's demise occurred in tandem with the MCU's unthinkably profitable rise.)

Conan O'Brien wanted to highlight that moment in a spoof trailer where a disgruntled Captain Marvel tries to pick the perfect film at the beloved rental spot. Although the film is set in the '90s, Cap also digs into some '80s films, with her considerations including The Goonies, Tootsie, Yentl, Beverly Hills Cop, Big Trouble in Little China, St. Elmo's Fire, Police Academy, a Jane Fonda workout video, Mississippi Burning, and Michael Keaton's Batman. She settles on an odd choice: Ghost Dad."Discover what makes her a hero," reads the title cards for the faux trailer. "It's two hours of Captain Marvel picking out a movie and then we show her watch the movie. That's right. You watch Captain Marvel watch another movie. We're Marvel. You'll watch whatever we goddamn tell you to watch." They're not wrong.

But while this joke was all in good fun, there's a small chorus of foolish criticism about Captain Marvel, a superhero who lost her powers and is tasked with saving the universe, for not smiling enough. One tweeting man thought it would be a good idea to change Carol Danvers' face by changing her fierce look to a smiling one.

Brie Larson, who portrays the superhero, recently responded to the edit with some other edits (via tweeter Jane Ritt), on her Instagram Stories, according to UPROXX.

"Breaking news: You can be you," read Larson's Instagram message. "That means you can smile or not. You can be strong in the ways you want to be. You can own who you are. If anyone tells you different don’t trust them." Word.
