Henry Cavill Shares Moving Tribute to His 'Justice League' Mustache

The mustache that launched a thousand memes has been shaved, but not forgotten.

The era of Henry Cavill’s infamous mustache is officially over.

The reigning DC Comics Superman facial hair became the unofficial star of last year’s Justice League. After Zack Snyder stepped down as director of Justice League and Joss Whedon took over, the movie’s stars all had to come back for reshoots, but by that time, Cavill had a mustache that he couldn’t shave due to his role in Mission Impossible 6.

The solution was to CGI his ‘stache out of the movie entirely, and although there might be a relatively natural way to do that with advanced technology, the people behind Justice League decided to go for the most downright ridiculous method, making Cavill, an objectively good looking man, look like a downright fool. The result was truly bizarre and generated plenty of memes and social media chatter, and as a result Cavill’s facial hair gained a popularity of its own.

However, the British actor and The Man From U.N.C.L.E star has finally decided to part ways with his “kingstache.” With that said, it’s not like he would’ve allowed the furry star to go without a proper tribute. In an Instagram video posted earlier today, Cavill celebrated his now departed mustache in the only way he knew how.

“Hello, don’t be alarmed, it’s me, Henry Cavill,” the actor says in the video. “Sometimes Superman and part time secret agent, but now, completely shaven.”

“I know, it’s hard to recognize me without 'kingstache.' Sometimes, I even have trouble recognizing myself. It’s hard for me to admit this is not CGI. He’s really gone,” Cavill says.

“I can tell you this, though. I will remember him. Always,” Cavill says, before the video launches into an emotional and nostalgic (and hilarious) slideshow of some of the mustache’s better moments. Shaved, but not forgotten.

This is a particularly good-humored way to poke fun both at himself and the strange popularity that his facial hair gained in the past few months, and although it worked perfectly for Cavill, I'm now bracing myself for all the less impressive #ShavedButNotForgotten tributes after everyone participates in No Shave November.
