According to Variety, the Suicide Squad sequel is officially a green light now that Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) has signed on to direct it. David Ayer, who wrote and directed the first Suicide Squad released last year, chose to direct the upcoming Gotham City Sirens instead of the Suicide Squad sequel in December.

O’Connor beat out Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax, The Shallows) and Mel Gibson for the directing job. It will be a busy couple of years for O’Connor, who has already agreed to directing The Accountant sequel, with Ben Affleck set to reprise his role in the action movie.

Although last year’s Suicide Squad was mostly hated by critics, the hype around the movie was enough to secure box-office success, raking in more than $745 million worldwide. No wonder, then, that Warner Bros. is so interested in getting the sequel up and going.

Warner Bros. plans to get a jumpstart on the sequel, and aim to start filming by fall 2018. If that is the case, we can expect to see a Suicide Squad sequel in theaters by 2019. Most of the main characters, including Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith, are set to reprise their roles as the Joker, Harley Quinn and Deadshot, respectively.

Ayer's next project, Gotham City Sirens, is also set to star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. The movie "will focus on the 'top female villains from the DC stable,'" including Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy.
