South Florida Takes Steps Towards Seceding from the Rest of Florida. Seriously

South Florida is sick of the rest of Florida's antics, and is taking steps to secede and form their own state.

People love ripping on Florida, and apparently those who live in South Florida are sick of it. They’re not sick of their state getting bashed, though; they’re sick of being associated with the people who cause it to happen.

And thus was the idea born that the counties of South Florida should secede from the rest of the state, creating a 51st state and also rendering U.S. flags everywhere obsolete. Beyond the flag-makers industry (who would stand to make a fortune if this happened), this group also has the support of the good people of South Miami.

On October 7, the city commission passed the resolution 3-2. As a key reason for their decision, they cited a lack of support from the state government for plans to deal with the effects climate change and rising sea levels will have on their city. “We have to be able to deal directly with this environmental concern and we can’t really get it done in Tallahassee,” South Miami mayor Walter Harris said. “I don’t care what people think — it’s not a matter of electing the right people.”

There’s still a long way to go for this plan to actually happen, and realistically it probably won’t. Every county in the new state would have to approve the secession plan and then it would have to pass a vote in Congress as well, so the odds aren’t exactly great.

However, if the state of South Florida does come into existence, there’s no doubt that they’ll have a hard time choosing which Pitbull song to make their official anthem.
