Saturday Night Live czar Lorne Michaels spoke out today about the upheaval at the Weekend Update desk, which saw Cecily Strong replaced with former SNL writer Michael Che. Strong hosted Update for just one season.

Speaking with the New York Times’ Bill Carr, Michaels said that “This is about a new era, what feels appropriate for now. That's why we did a lot of combinations and tests, and this is kind of where we came out.”

That’s great and all, but with Seth Meyers leaving last year and Strong teaming with Colin Jost, wasn’t that a “new era” too? Is Michaels’ definition of an “era” approximately one half of a television season?

Something isn’t adding up here. Seems like Michaels may just be too polite to say the truth: that last season, Update wasn’t any good.
