Remy Ma joined Joe Budden, Scottie Beam, and Brandon Jenkins on the latest episode of Revolt’s State of the Culture to talk about everything from Lana Del Rey’s beef with Azealia Banks to the American Music Awards. Around the 30-minute mark in the video above, their conversation shifts to a viral video of Lil Xansaying the n-word while yelling at a man in a food court.
Scottie and Jinx both side against Xan’s use of the slur, as Scottie explained how she’s not mad, but still 100% not okay with any who is not black using the n-word. “Everybody wants to be an n***a until they’re an n***a,” she quipped.
But Remy Ma feels differently. “I don’t usually get offended, regardless of what your nationality is if I feel like you’re not using it as a racial slur,” she said.
Ma goes on to explain how she’s comfortable with non-black people, like her longtime collaborator Fat Joe, co-opting the word. “I hear it so frequently from people who aren’t black people,” she continued. “Like Fat Joe, he’s the blackest Spanish guy on this planet earth and I’ve never questioned it.”
Remy is more than entitled to her opinion, but this is not a free pass. The State of the Culture conversation also lacks a bit of the nuance when it comes to the differences between race, nationality, and ethnicity, as evidenced by Budden asking Ma her background, but we'll save that for later.
