It’s the return of Weezy.
On Tuesday, Lil Wayne announced the official drop date for Tha Carter V—his highly anticipated “final” album that was announced in 2012. As we all know, the project remained in limbo for the past several years, as it was shelved due to Wayne’s business dispute with Cash Money boss Birdman.
Well, after years of anticipation, leaks, and drama, we now know when Tha Carter V will finally hit the digital streets: his birthday (Sept. 27), but technically Friday, Sept. 28.
Wayne shared the news via social media Tuesday, dropping a link to the album's countdown as well as a pre-order. The project's official website features the cover art shared by Weezy years ago. Those who purchase a digital copy of Tha Carter V will also have early ticket access to Wayne's 2019 headline tour.
“Y'all hung in there with me for the last 30 millions [...] I can't do nothing but thank y'all for all the love and all the passion and every ounce of everything I have left in my heart,” he said in a video. “It goes to y'all, honesty: my fans, my supporters, the world [...] I am nothing, absolutely nothing, without my fans. I hope you guys love this album [...] With this album, I'm giving you more than me. You gotta always remember that this is years of work [...] that you'll hopefully be listening to.”
There are still a lot of questions surrounding Tha Carter V, like which artists will be featured. Over the past several years, we’ve heard rumors about potential contributors, including everyone from Justin Bieber and Mike Will Made-It to The L.O.X. and Mustard to Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar. Though we’ve yet to receive an official tracklist, Weezy’s ex-girlfriend Nivea claimed she would appear on the album alongside Drake.
“Oh yeah, I’m on there,” the singer said on The M+M+M Show. “He put Drake on the song that he and I did. We did it a while ago.”
Nivea also claimed the mysterious record would likely become a single.
Stay tuned as more details about Tha Carter V become available.
Wayne is also scheduled to appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon next Tuesday. Several weeks later, the New Orleans rapper will receive the I Am Hip Hop award at the 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards hosted by DeRay Davis.
