313 people attending O Marisquiño Festival in Spain have been injured following the collapse of a boardwalk, reports Associated Press.
The oceanside boardwalk in the Spanish city of Vigo collapsed during a nighttime concert, with five seriously hurt. Most of those injured in the accident were young, attending one of the last shows of the three-day festival.
Wooden boards on the boardwalk cracked across the central section, with festival goers sliding into the sea below. Eyewitnesses say there was a lot of panicking on the scene, with the head of the Galician region's health authority says that all 313 injured required medical treatment.
The five seriously hurt during the collapse did not suffer life-threatening injuries, officials claimed. The president of the Vigo port authority told Cadena Ser radio that the boardwalk likely collapsed "because of excessive weight" on it. He believes that a structural problem led to the accident. The mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, has announced an investigation into the incident.
