XXXTentacion's "SAD!" Breaks Taylor Swift's Single-Day Streaming Record

The John Cunningham-produced single reportedly garnered 10.4 million Spotify streams on Tuesday, just a day after the 20-year-old rapper was gunned down in Florida.

One day after his murder, XXXTentacion set a new record for single-day global streams on Spotify.

According to Spotifycharts.com, XXX’s John Cunningham-produced record “SAD!” racked in about 10.4 million streams on Tuesday. Taylor Swift previously held the record with her hit single “Look What You Made Me Do,” which amassed 10.1 million streams on Aug. 25, 2017.

The feat is especially notable considering Spotify’s controversial decision to remove XXX’s music from its editorial content, including the wildly popular RapCaviar playlist. The decision was announced last month as a part of the platform’s newly implemented hate content and hateful conduct policy; however, Spotify reversed its decision several weeks later, and XXX’s music returned to the service’s curated playlist earlier this month.

“While we believe our intentions were good, the language was too vague, we created confusion and concern, and didn't spend enough time getting input from our own team and key partners before sharing new guidelines,” Spotify said in a statement to the Miami New Times.

On the day of his death, Spotify paid tribute to XXX’s life and career with a playlist titled “This Is XXXTentacion” playlist, as well as posting a “Rest In Peace, XXXTentacion” message on its “Browse” page.

XXX was fatally shot Monday after leaving a motorsport dealership in Florida, and was pronounced dead shortly after. The case is still open, as authorities have yet to identify any suspects or a motive.
