Waka Flocka Says His Mom, Not Gucci Mane, Deserves Credit for His Rap Career

Waka Flocka explains why his mom and not Gucci Mane should be credited with helping to jumpstart his rap career.

Late last week, Waka Flocka released "Was My Dawg," a diss track aimed squarely at his former friend and close rap associate Gucci Mane. Waka didn’t mention Gucci by name on the song, but he did make it very clear that it was about him.

"Always yelling Brick Squad, always talking fam first," Waka rapped. "When your ass got locked up, you turned on the fam first/Always taking fucking credit, never put in no work."

It wasn’t all that surprising to hear Waka going in on Gucci. He actually did an interview on BBC Radio 1Xtra prior to releasing the song and took some jabs at Gucci during it. And Waka and Gucci haven’t really been on the best of terms for a few years now.

But despite their beef, some people took Waka’s diss as him biting the hand that has fed him in the past. Gucci played a part in introducing Waka to the world back in 2010, and the two appeared on a number of records together at the start of their respective careers.

But while speaking with TMZ a short time after he put the song out, Waka said Gucci gets more credit than he deserves for jumpstarting his career. In Waka’s mind, his mother Debra Antney—who once served as the manager for Waka, Gucci, Nicki Minaj, OJ Da Juiceman, French Montana, and more—is the one who should be getting all the credit.

"My fans deserve for me to elaborate on why I went so hard at the person that 'started my career,'" he told TMZ. "To make the record straight, my mother started my career. My mother started Gucci’s career. My mother started Nicki’s career, [OJ Da] Juiceman’s career, French Montana’s career. Lex Luger as a producer. She molded us all."
