UPDATE (May 1): The 14-year-old boy who lost his life in the East London sword attack has been named as Daniel Anjorin, BBC News has confirmed.

It has also been confirmed that Daniel attended Bancroft’s school—the same school attended by Grace O’Malley-Kumar, who was killed in a random stabbing attack in Nottingham in June 2023.

Bancroft’s school has said in a statement that Daniel was a “true scholar” who had a “positive nature and gentle character”. They also described him as a “core member” of the community, adding that “losing such a young pupil is something we will always struggle to come to terms with.”

The Met Police has said that the suspect struck a 33-year-old man when he crashed his van into a property on Laing Close at 7am on Tuesday morning. He then attacked the man, leaving him with a neck wound.

Another man, aged 35, was then cut on his arm by the suspect when he was attacked inside a nearby house. Both victims’ conditions are not considered to be life-threatening.

It is said that the suspect then went on to attack Daniel Anjorin while on his way to school; he died from stab wounds shortly after being taken to hospital. The suspect then attacked two police officers as they tried to arrest him.

The remaining four—two members of the public and two police officers—are still in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The motivation behind the attack is currently being investigated, although the police believe the attack is not linked to “any acts of terrorism”.

Video footage shows a man armed with a sword walking towards a number of homes shortly before police were able to arrest him. Police say the 36-year-old man was tasered and then arrested 22 minutes after the first 999 call was made.
